A Seer Stone And A Hat..."Translating" The Book Of Mormon

Bill McKeever from Mormonism Research Ministry explains how the founder of the LDS Church, Joseph Smith, claimed that an angel named Moroni visited Smith in September of 1823. This heavenly messenger is reported to have told Smith about gold plates that contained a record of "former inhabitants of this continent, and the source from whence they sprang." >>

Interesting Lecture on video--

My Comment on the Book of Mormon's Coming forth:

The LDS Proposed Proof of a viable Restoration was Initially based on the idea that the coming forth of Book of Mormon was going to be a convincing “Marvelous Work and a Wonder". This would mean that its translation, would also be demonstrability a miracle.

But Alas, the various accounts of eye witnesses about the ways and means that it allegedly came forth are not even consistent in LDS history. Thus this problem harms its demonstrability as a being a true miracle.

Yet the Mormons still insist that the Book of Mormon’s coming forth is a miracle.

---------------------
The "a marvelous work and a wonder" idea still lingers on in current times as seen here from a News Paper article.

SALT LAKE CITY-- To most Mormons, the volume of scripture that defines the faith is "a marvelous work and a wonder" of ancient origin that was revealed to church founder Joseph Smith by an angel.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Even recent LDS leaders in authority within the LDS Church have verified the LDS claim to the world that the Book of Mormon was a convincing” Marvelous work and a wonder”.
(The Book of Mormon’s purpose is) “To stand as a witness to all the world that Joseph Smith was the Lord’s anointed through whom the foundation was laid for the great latter-day work of restoration. (Mormon Doctrine, by LDS Apostle Bruce R Mc Conkie, page 99)

Mormons think of the Book of Mormon and other latter-day (extra-biblical) scripture to be foretold by ancient Biblical prophets. They look at Isaiah and interpret the as a prophecy of the coming forth of the Book of Mormon. In turn, the Book of Mormon is supposed to be so marvelous that it will be convincing proof that Joseph Smith divinely restored lost Christianity.
Isa. 29: 14.
"Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do marvellous work work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall ,perish and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid."

If Isaiah 28:14 were really about the coming forth of the Book of Mormon then it would be the kind of event would be so profound that all the scholars, historians, archeologists, cultural geographers would have to have had revised world history because of information found in the Book of Mormon. None of which has happened. Afterall not even the Mormons could get the story straight on how the miracle happened!

The Doctrine and Covenants is considered by LDS to be a 19th Century record of the history of this Marvelous restoration of lost Christianity.

D&C 4:1
NOW behold, a marvelous work is about to come forth among the children of men.

D&C 6: 1. D&C 11:1 and D&C 12: 1.

A GREAT and marvelous work is about to come forth unto the children of men.

D&C 18: 44.

And by your hands I will work a marvelous work among the children of men, unto the convincing of many of their sins, that they may come unto repentance, and that they may come unto the kingdom of my Father.

The Book of Mormon claims of itself to be this “marvelous work’

1 Ne. 14: 7 (7-17)

For the time cometh, saith the Lamb of God, that I will work a great and a marvelous work among the children of men; a work which shall be everlasting, either on the one hand or on the other—either to the convincing of them unto peace and life eternal, or unto the deliverance of them to the hardness of their hearts and the blindness of their minds unto their being brought down into captivity, and also into destruction, both temporally and spiritually, according to the captivity• of the devil, of which I have spoken.

1 Ne. 22: 8.

And after our seed is scattered the Lord God will proceed to do a amarvelous• work among the Gentiles, which shall be of great cworth• unto our seed; wherefore, it is likened unto their being nourished by the dGentiles and being carried in their arms and upon their shoulders.

Though still viewed today as a "marvelous work" my Mormons, just how the miracle of it happened is in disagreement in historical accounts. This may well lead a thinkin' person to doubt that any of the claimed LDS marvelous events ever actually took place in history.
